SANTIAGO.- Colombia owes Ecuador and all countries in Latin America an explanation for having crossed the Ecuadorian border to execute an operation that ended in the assassination of number-two FARC official Raúl Reyes, stated the President on Monday.
"A situation of this nature undoubtedly warrants an explanation from Colombia to the people of Ecuador, the President of Ecuador and the rest of the region", the President told Radio ADN.
Bachelet also maintained that borders must be respected, saying that she is "concerned" about the current diplomatic crisis involving Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
"National borders and limits are based on many international treaties and it is a very delicate situation when (a border) is breached, for whatever reason, be it legitimate or otherwise", she asserted.
"We are extremely worried about this. We regret, and cannot agree with the fact, that the border was not respected, for whatever reason and that, above all, Ecuador has felt violated by this intervention", she added.
President Bachelet also indicated that she has contacted Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, as well as her political counterparts in Brazil and Argentina in an attempt to diffuse the situation.
